ADA Training: Wheelchair Lifts

IMG_0505Many of the ADA spots in the venues are on level with the venue doors and can be accessed easily through the building entrances or by using the elevators, but some spots need a Wheelchair Lift to get to them. During a normal shift a student usher will be taking these patrons to their locations, but it’s good to know where all these locations are in case a student is not available.

IMG_7709The operation of these lifts is fairly simple. The House Manager and Student House Manager has a key you put in to turn it on. Use the Up / Down button to bring the lift to the level you are with the patron. Then open the door and help the patron in. Close the door and then press the Up / Down button in the direction the lift needs to go. Then open the door for the patron at this level and lead them to their seat.

The Leighton Concert Hall has two Wheelchair Lifts to accommodate patrons. Down the Main Floor Men’s Restroom hallway is our Main Level lift. It is to the left, just before the double doors that lead to the backstage area. This allows patrons to access the Leighton through Door C and go to the wheelchair spots at A1 and A20. The balcony lift is on the Upper Level down the Men’s Restroom hallway and to the left before the double doors. These patrons can be lead through Door G to the ADA spots in Box 5.

The Decio Mainstage Theatre has three Wheelchair Lifts. Down the Main Floor Women’s Restroom hallway is the Main Level lift. It is to the right, just before the double doors that lead to the backstage area. This takes patrons through Door C to the ADA spots in Box 1. The balcony lifts are on the Upper Level. One is down the Women’s Restroom hallway and to the right before the double doors. These patrons can be lead through Door G to the ADA spots in Box 5. The other upper lift is down the hallway where the Reyes Organ Hall Upper Level is. Go through Door H on the left and the lift allows access to the ADA spots in Box 6.

There is one more Wheelchair Lift that you may encounter and that is before the steps to the Smith Promenade, between the Decio and Reyes. The Door is labeled “Lift Access to Smith Arcade”. Now I don’t recall any video games in this “Arcade” but hopefully we can get Ms. Pac-Man in by year’s end! Anyways, this lift is used for anyone who needs to go through the Smith Promenade to the Decio Greenroom or anyone who is coming up from the Smith Promenade, no doubt upset that there are no video games in there!
